Top three tips for thriving through winter

Don’t just survive winter, thrive through winter.

Don’t just survive winter, thrive through winter.

Winter is invariably the time where people start to notice “the wheels falling off” their health. All sorts of things start to go wrong. Colds, flus, but also the dreaded aches and pains flaring up thanks to the cold winds and chill in the air.

Here are my top three defences against the winter health struggles.

Number 1. Move

The cold often plays havoc with our bodies during winter. The cool air and colder temperatures makes us feel tight, achy and maybe a bit uncomfortable especially on those cold mornings!

Cold weather tends to slow down our circulation and cause stagnation, therefore we might feel slightly stiff and move even less—which is counterproductive! In Chinese health, there is a saying “If there is blockages (stagnation), there will be pain.”

Yes, I get the couch and Netflix is much more inviting on a cold evening or morning. Hey, even the weekends but it’s not helping—bugger!

Make sure you keep moving…walk, stretch, continue on with your normal activities. If you’re exercising in the cold, make sure you put on a jacket or long pants afterwards. Cool your body down slowly to give your muscles a chance to stay warm and avoid any potential lock-ups.

Chiropractic adjustments are also great to re-align your body and help improve flexibility and mobility, hence you are less likely to feel pain and discomfort. We can also assess your body and recommend some simple stretches or movement that suits you.

Number 2. Vitamin C and Zinc

Winter is also the time to boost your immune system to maximum strength. My favourite ways to do this is by upping two key vitamins and minerals:- Vitamin C and Zinc.

Vitamin C is a very strong antioxidant that helps the body strengthen its natural defences. Exactly what you need in winter!

It also helps fight free radicals that are the enemy of the body and good health. Additionally, Vitamin C helps to boost the white blood cell production which is essential for optimum functioning of the immune system. Definitely a great reason to get some Vitamin C into you!

Now to our good friend Zinc. Zinc is considered a trace element that is essential to the healthy functioning of the immune system. If you are low in zinc, then your body will logically be more susceptible to attacks on the immune system. In winter, that’s the dreaded colds and flu.

For the right dosages see your local pharmacy or quality health food store for the best advice for your needs.

Number 3. Essential Oils

These little drops of goodness are truly gifts from nature and have been used for centuries as remedies to prevent and support the winter nasties. DoTerra is our preferred brand here at the clinic because of the purity of the product and the ethical way in which the oil is harvested and produced. Their standards are second to none in the industry.

I’m a new convert to the On-Guard product. Not only does this product smell great diffused, but it’s also got so many other uses. For example, you can get it in tiny beadlet form to take each day to help support your body during winter and other times when you are more likely to be subjected to others that are unwell. Think shopping centres, airports, schools, public transport etc. You can also combine the oil with a carrier such as coconut and rub down your spine or on your chest to give an extra layer of protection.

Easy Air, is the natural version of the good old chest rub without the petroleum based carrier. Definitely worth trying out for any winter congestion.

There are a stack more amazing oils that all work well together to support you. The added bonus is they smell great. Just contact us here at the clinic if you want more information. We’d be more than happy to help you out with what would work best for you.
